Why I am running.

To make changes now that will positively impact our children’s educational future and ensure the best educational options and outcomes for years to come.

PUSD Vision

I have spent my career saving schools and colleges that were moving toward closure. I have the experience, ambition and most importantly, with my own children in the school district, the heart to move our district forward.

I am a Sierra Madre resident with two children who are entering first grade.  Like many of you, I have concerns about where I will send them to high school. As a school board member I want to make changes now that will positively impact our children’s educational future and ensure the best educational options and outcomes for years to come. Families need to feel confident they are sending their children to the best schools, whether they are attending elementary, middle school, or high school. We have the right to receive a high quality public education, and I believe it is in our power to make it happen. For example, as a result of previous struggles, we will have empty school buildings this fall. I want to ensure we use these buildings as a long term investment that will benefit the schools, community, and ultimately the district for years to come.

Collaboration

At Pacific Oaks College, Crystal was responsible for enrollment, marketing, and student services for the Pasadena campus, the online school and the San Jose location. In order to do this, she worked collaboratively with the Pasadena community and leaders from within the college. Rebuilding a school quickly requires the ability to think strategically, understand the long and short term benefits of choices, and make decisions quickly to ensure quality and growth. This type of work is Crystal’s greatest strength. Crystal is an action-oriented visionary thinker, but she knows that education is a team sport, and deeply values the importance of collaboration and relationships.

Questions and Answers

As a parent, Covid-19 has left me with many more questions than answers as I consider what school will look like in the coming months and years.  I know you feel the same way. I have the experience to lead our schools in this uncertain time.  I have spent my career building and advocating for quality online curriculum and school experiences. Though it’s not my preference to have my children attend school online at this juncture in their education, I know what a quality, engaged curriculum can look like, and it starts with our teachers. I want to ensure we are preparing our teachers to teach online, equipping them appropriately for the changes they will encounter, and most importantly, listening to them.  Our children’s education is in their hands and we need to ensure we hear their needs, concerns, fears, and hopes. As a Board Member, I will make sure this happens as soon as I am elected to the board.
